SOCIAL STUDIES

Key points for your essay (qn a)

Developments in transportation & communications (t&c):
- globalisation could not have occurred without improvement in t & c technology.
- Perform two different but complementary roles in encouraging globalisation
- people, goods can move about freely.
- information can be transmitted from place to place in form of ideas, instructions and images.

Transportation:
- Improvement has "shrunk" the world = in terms of time taken to get from one place to another.
Eg: Containerization.
  • Reduced time and cost of moving goods over long distances
  • Greatly simplified transfer of goods
  • Easily transferred from ships to trucks
- Increase mobility of goods and people
- Efficient & integrated transportation infrastructure:- airports, railways, highways
-> to facilitate movement
- efficient transport made it possible for goods to be moved around the world easily.
- people can travel easily.
Eg: Businessman from HK can attend morning meeting at SG and be back in HK by evening.

Communications:
- Improvements has made communications among people in different locations faster & convenient
- People across globe can communicate via tools:- phones, video conferencing, fax
- Satellite technology enables messages to be transmitted from one location & receive in another part of the world simultaneously.
-> Live telecast of World Cup at South Africa to Singapore.

- led to invention of internet
- enable consumers to access information about new products & places conveniently & efficiently
Eg: Reservation at hotel is possible thru internet.
- Can also buy ticket via internet without leaving home.
- Transformed way one communicates, conducts business and such.
- this led the TNCs to coordinate and control worldwide activities

=== Developments in T&Cs led to TNCs? or Is a factor to TNCs?

TNCs:
- Large global firms operate in no. of countries
- Have production or services outside country of origin
Eg: Toyota Motor

- Set up operations in different locations around world for variety of reason.
  • sourcing for new market
  • lowering cost production
- coordinate and control Headquarters, located in country of origin.
- source components from around the world before assembling final product in another country
Eg: Boeing, American TNC, sources aeroplane parts from around the world
- Doors from France
- Tail Fin from USA

(pg 49 of textbook)

#~#

Environmental Degradation:
-> Deforestation & Related problems.

- cut down to make way for development of industries, agriculture, housing.
- govt allow trees to be cut down at rapid rate as economic activities:- mining, forestry can generate revenue for country.
Eg: Brazil`s Beef
- Success as beef exporter.
- comes at price of huge devastation of Amazon forest.
- total area of forest lost in Amazon rose from 41.5 million hectares in 1990 to 58.7 million hectares in 2000.
- suspicion that Brazil`s deforestation rate is due to high international demand for Brazilian Beef.

Global Warming:

- worsened environmental problems
- goods can move freely due to airplanes and ships
-> they produce large quantity of greenhouse gases:- Carbon Dioxide & Nitrogen Oxides
- Factories & different modes of transportation around world emit large quantity of fumes to atmosphere every day.
- Presence of gases in atmosphere leads to increase in average global temperature
Eg:
In 1895: the global average temperature was 13.4 and in 2020, it will be 14.5

First paper.

How was it? :) I hope it was manageable.
I know the MYE results were disappointing, but to think of it, how many of your actually put in your effort to study or at least read the notes given by the teachers?
It's okay, this isn't the end.

Yes, it's a process. You've to keep on going. Never say never, never give up! I know this might be a little bit, uhm.. worthless to read about, but just think. Without practice, you won't go anywhere. It'll slowly become a habit.

"It's not the work that's hard, it's the discipline." --Anonymous

When you're down or unmotivated, look through your noMADic booklet. The photos, the videos. All that we went through together. The walks, the talks, the running, the complaining, the sun, the camping trip, the long bus rides. We walked all over Singapore. Is that not a big accomplishment?

Yes, they are just numbers on a piece of paper that'll determine your future. Others are similar to us. blood, nerve impulses, brains. Equal.
What makes them so special?

Never use 4E4 as an excuse.

:) Enjoy your holidays!
There's intensive tomorrow.

4E4?

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth."
- Dan Rather

"Thank you and goodbye Mr./Ms./Miss/Mdm ____. Have a nice day" How many times have we said that? Everyday, after lessons. And how many of us actually mean it? Or we just say it cause we are forced to, and it becomes a habit..

I tend to forget that the person standing in front of us is a teacher. He/She is a human being. We show our attitude towards them, we rebelled, we yelled, we do just about anything that can/may/always displeases the teacher.
They have a life on their own. Yet, they chose to stay back with us for extra lessons just to ensure that we are well-aware of our progress in our studies. Yet, we never turn up. Just because we are lazy. Just because we had a rough day. Just because (insert your own excuse)

Mr. See: Thank you for always being there for us. For your "funny" jokes, your concern and care, your 'pov' of 'other' classes. your contributions, your motivations, your talks, your teachings, your 'let-people-use-your-camera' ability, your idea in donating the frog-bank thing to make a wish, your running with us during M.R & for always believing in us even if we have disappointed you frequently. Thank you :)

Ms. Yew: Thank you for always 'loaning' us your magazines :), for always being there, for being flexible with our 'attitude', for contributing lots to the class decoration, for keeping the frog-bank, for influencing us with your English :), for teaching us, for waking-us-up, for encouraging us & for always believing in us even if we were too much. Thank you :)

Mr. Tan: you've been with us for quite some time and it's a miracle how you can always tolerate with us despite our 'bad attitude'. we sincerely apologize if we've said/did things that is unimaginable. we should understand that you had a long day, and we should respect your words/decisions. Thank you for always joking with us, for taping the guys' eyebrows, making us laugh, pulling the guys' sideburns (it really hurts :O), for being able to care for us, for always treating us like adults even if we violated it, for always checking on us, pushing us & for always believing in us and never giving up on us :)

Mrs. Lau: thank you for your guidance, for your teachings even if you need not teach us, for always reminding us about our homework and revising before class starts, for treating us like adults, for making us laugh and smile, without you i guess our class wouldn't really be passing biology :) thank you! :D

Mrs Tan: Thank you for giving your best effort to make us understand your lessons better through the videos and notes that you have made. We know it is difficult on your side to juggle so many things/classes at one time. Even though we have the least number of lessons with you, all of us in the class know that you had our interest deep down in your heart, and if possible you do want to see us excel in our studies.

Mdm Kartini: Thank you for treating everyone in the class equally. Even though at times our ears get hurt from your amplified voice, it was an effective way to not make us fall asleep. Also, that song/exercise that you made us do as before the class begins when we look fatigue, somehow did made us feel a little bit more awake as we laughed through it. Thank you for your guidance too.

Miss Khong:Thank you for giving the few of us the privilege of studying in a well air-conditioned room, thank you for being patient with all of our laziness and "i forget to do homework" attitude.

We should be grateful and thankful that there are people who still believes in us. Has the noMADic journey taught you nothing?
Did you walk the whole of Singapore just to be famous for failure again?
Did you know that there are SOME classes out there saying irrelevant stuff about our class just because we're in 4E4?
Yes, we are in 4E4, Face it.
If we don't work hard now, then when?
Next year? Next two years? A day before the O Levels?
You think you can make it, but we all can't without effort, I know that and I'm doing my best to juggle stuff about.
The teachers are giving their best in teaching us, not only us BUT OTHER CLASSES. We're not alone.
Is it the time again for us to give up on ourselves, just because we're in 4E4?
Never use that as an excuse, but a reason to excel.
:)

- 4E4 loves the teachers and everything :) and the whole entire Earth.
Recycle! Reduce! Reuse!

Best of luck to all! :D

Hey hey! :D

Come on E4, we've had many wake up calls, but pick up that wake up call please. Don't ignore it or end it. We need it, make full use of it.

Don't let our efforts go down the drain! we've gone through many things and have made it to the end. We've done it before we can do it again. Do your best. Do not be afraid to push yourself to the limit.

People, the brains, the arms and all, what for? What for have them if you don't use them properly? What for? come on!.

Be so motivated that giving up is never a word in your dictionary and tired is never something you've heard before :D

You want those As go and get them! You want it you work for it! people, As okay!

Live with it, life is never fair. That's why you'll have that motivation to get what you want right? If life is fair, life is boring. It's the last stretch 4E4. Go for your As.

Support each other from now on! we want it we can do it we must do it we will achieve it! The pain, those tears, don't let them flow and be wasted. Hardwork people. It starts NOW

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond imagination
We ask ourselves, who are we to be brilliant, beautiful, talented and fabulous?
But honestly, who are we not to be so?

It's

time

to

wake

up.

"You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage - pleasantly, smilingly, non-apologetically - to say 'no' to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger 'yes' burning inside."
---- Stephen Covey

The I Play, I Pay policy will take effect from today onwards.
So, all test including quiz/ common test & etc will be counted
I'll issue out this card thing and on it would be

Your "Quote of the day"

You are to get yourself motivated and also think about the quotes.
and then you'll exchange it with the person next to you.
And please do not lose the cards :(

Hehe :) I already bought the piggy bank for the iplayipay :)

Anyway, it's time to wake up.
I know that sometimes, we might not enjoy the subject, but you need to think about the others.
We're a class.
others do want to study too. so think about others too.
okay? :)

if you dislike something and wanna "talk it out",
keep your comments to yourself.

new rule.

HEY 4E4!

Bring $16 tomorrow :) for the class tee

I play, I pay.
If any of you fail your test or barely pass (eg 15/30)
you will HAVE TO PAY 50 cents to the class fund!
everybody will. and i don't want this thing to die off early.
i will keep a coin bank and collate ;)
and we can use this for our chalet okay! :D

BUT, if the whole class keeps on not passing the test lol, the price will increase.

*put yourself on the line*

so, if you don't wana lose your 50 cents to pen markings on a paper,
motivate yourself. work hard. be positive :)

it might sound stupid,
but i don't want any of you to get marks that are unsatisfying to your eye and others.
i want all of use to promote with FLYING C O L O U R S.
not only one, two or four, but ALL 35.

ps: i love you guys HAHA.

If we can't, then we MUST.

The money we earned from selling apples.
It was one of the challenges given.
We earned more than $80 without any capital being used.

Challenge - Telling tourist how unique singapore is.

Challenge - valuable lessons .

We played a game called group sit up. We must learn to trust each other, have resilience. Never to give up easily even when there is obstacles. Through this game we are trying to imply that even though we might have difficulties, we can still overcome it with each other support.

Challenge - Uniquely singapore

We interviewed and taught a group of tourist from South Africa about things that are well-known in Singapore. Thus, we decided to teach them our "famous" Singlish. When they come to our country, they can learn to understand and respect our different cultures

challenge- difference maker

We interviewed this Vallet servicer and we realised how important their job was. Even though they might be insignificant to many, they have fufilled their responsibilties to the society by doing what they are good at.

challenge - Leader without title.

A leader can be mould or born. Though a student is a leader without a title, but through this race we can see that ALL of us can be leaders in our own ways. A leader must be empathetic and self-disciplined, one that can serve and lead others even without being recognised.

the long, long trip to fullerton!!!!

after completing our tasks at SMU, we made our way to Clarke Quay. We assumed that was a station along it, but no, there was not. It was all the way at 1 Fullerton, which was a long, long, long way to go to. However, without any hesitation we decided to run all the way to fullerton FROM Clarke Quay.
We ran all the way, breathless, tired and sweaty.
A lot gave up, but the 3-indoor days and values we learnt in school kept us going, which was
RI3SE!

We also, naturally, argued as a class due to the directions but we had to respect each others' desicions and just go for it. We also got CONNED! by some youths, but it was okay
*There are no failures, only learning experiences*

We also taught a tourist how to speak SINGLISH, as Singapore is famous for it (Challenge: Uniquely Singapore!")
We searched for tourists around the bridge near Fullerton 1, two rejected us, as they were "busy" (but we saw them walking anyway..)
Finally...
We met a group of tourists all the way from SOUTH AFRICA, they agreed to spare us some time.
We taught them how to say "Okay" in our language which was "Okay lah"
It was really adorable :P
We thanked them sincerely and went off, as we had a time constraint. :'(
We also learnt a bit of them like where were they from.
We had the courage to went up to strangers and asked them to teach us Singlish.
Learners. Thinkers. Leaders.

4E4'10, just do it :)

Pssst: video uploaded. hehe

HEY 4E4

This might not be related to the race, but I'm really proud that you guys did your best and went all the way!
Even though we were very irritated by the distance & such, we never gave up once :)
Once again, we proved that despite being from the last class, we can stick together and always achieve what we dream of ^-^v

We're already on the MRT station back to school! :DDD
Few more stops and we'll end the race.
---
Yesterday, we had a rough night, considering the long journey and the time. We were all tired.
(even though we had MAC DONALD FOR DINNNERRRRRR! ;D)
We pitched our tents under the moonlight. A quick shower and off we go to rest.
Although it was tiring, sweaty, tiring, tiring, irritating and time consuming, we still made it.
*save the best, last*
---
OKAYYYY.2 more stops and the champions will be back! till then!!!
- Put3!
-Gerald.g!

to SMU we go!

at SMU, there were a few different schools, buildings. we had to ask for instructions to get around, to the block we wanted to go which was the school of accountancy. when we reached there, we quickly gathered around and took our beautiful CLASS photo!!!
when we were there, we discussed and decided to complete one of our challenges, the apprentice.
our class worked hard and decided to embark on a half an hour session to sell as much as we could. our class worked hard, showed resilience and although we had a hard time persuading the people to buy our stuff, and we managed to meet our quota for this station! after the half an hour, we took the responsibility to get meet our designated buddy and we reported to our coaches.
the coaches were happy for us, as we managed to meet our quota. we learned many things in this trip both soft skills and hard skills, ranging from learning how to persuade customers to having to the inner strength to walk the far distance. you know why we're always the best? because we're 4E4, the class of possibilities.

all for one, one for all.

Children's day

After much consideration, we decided to do a challenge & Nanyang Poly so we would not waste time. *Kill two birds with one stone!*

Our aim was to teach a group of youths about perseverance & self-disicpline.
We gathered around the bench to plan an activity.
After much discussion,we came out with an activity that involves 4 youths from the dragon boat team.
They were suppose to put their feet together, interlocking their hands and do their best to pull themselves up together, as a team.
After so much attempts they finally did it.

This game was introduced to them as a lesson about life. It's not about how fast you finish the task, but how you complete it. And have that "YEAY!" feeling :))

They managed to work together and achieve their aim that is to stand up together.
After they've done it,we shared with them what was the aim in doing the activity and the values behind it which is perseverance and determination.
And off we went to our next station! :DDD

*Choices have consequences*
We went to NYP to search for the red umbrella with the logo.
We ran back and forth despite the hot weather.
We stopped at one corner,to ask some students for directions.
After so much, discussion,we saw 5A2 heading towards us.
They were going somewhere. Assuming that they had reached first,we thought they had found the place. We had the resilience to keep on going.
So we wanted to follow 5A2 so as not to waste time.
They were heading towards the swimming area.
Our instincts told us that something was not quite right to follow them.
So we stopped and discussed. We decided to go the other way round,as we are not sheep. WE ARE EAGLES!
While on the way,we asked some of the staffs there and they told us to go to the club rooms.
We went there and finally found the umbrellas in the swimming area. The 5A2 went to the correct place but only they took a longer way.
We thought that we could not get in the swimming area. But we asked the security guard and she let us in.
We were so euphoric. And thus, all of us went in and asked a guy to help us take a picture with the red umbrella. In this station we learned not to give up and we need perseverance.

Currently in bus 136!
Otw to NYP.
Earlier on we had our ice breakers..
We beat E1 in decoding our codes for starting the race.
We then had our lunch. (Rice,Chicken,Egg,Vegetables!)
Then we did our planning for the route that we're going.
We took some pictures.
And then off we go! On our way,we sold 3 apples for $2!!!
What an achievement for a start in the race.
We then walked to our bus stop,And almost missed the bus.

hehe

Dear 4E4:

Many times, we've been given up on. we've been told we will never succeed. we've been told many lies. but, we're still alive here, smiling, laughing, cheering and such. we've got that spirit that no other class would have. we do our best and sometimes, life is just unfair. we'll never give up right? :)
Today, i really meant what i said. i really love you guys (more than cartoons). you guys gave me hope to study, to excel, to succeed. we can work together and prove to others that your background does not dictate your future.
We've did so much, and even won the Level Head Champion thing, among 11 classes.
Let's not give up, okay?
Like any other class, we got the same brain, blood, bones, skin. what makes them so special?
everybody's the same. :D
LOL, i know this post like super long and no link. but really, i lovelovelove you guys. i love you guys more than Shinee, Spongebob & everything.
Tomorrow will be a challenge. You'll have that urge to give up, but don't.
what for give up? you're halfway there.

okay, enough hehe

Please? :)

Hey :)
I know most of you don't want to attend the camp,
because of the cost, the duration and location. (which I'm quite concern about)
But... we're only going there for 2D 1N, and the rest is Day-Camp!

But, we're not alone.
We are attending this camp along with the:
Sec 4A1,A2,A3,A4,T1,E1,E2,E3,5A1,5A2!

We all have to pay. and it's through Edusave, right?
I believe our Edusave account is enough.
I mean, you can't use the money after you graduate from Sec 4.
What if you have hundreds of $$ inside? ;)

And for those without the edusave account, i know it's hard. but we can help you guys! :D
we're one after all.

http://empoweringschools.com.sg/
This is the website (I think). AKLTG is a realllllllllllllyyyyyyyy a good company!
From what I've experienced so far, this is the best camp ever, (along with Innotrek)
The coaches are really positive and nice! :D

And the Sec 4'09 had a great time during the camp.
Let's enjoy it okay?
and we can learn something from it too!

We wouldn't want to disappoint our teachers right?
Look at what we've did so far :)

"Choices have consequences."

I know, that I might be exaggerating. But do go. Okay?
The camp is compulsory too :)
If the camp isn't wonderful, I'll buy you guys gummy bears + worms ;D
Really!
